A video of an elderly couple, who sell home-cooked meals from a tiny stall named ‘Baba Ka Dhaba’ in South Delhi, has recently gone viral on social media and now #BabaKaDhaba is the number one hashtag on Twitter.

The video clip was first posted by food blogger Gaurav Vasan. The story of their struggle in the coronavirus crisis was shared by Twitter user Vasundhara Tankha Sharma, urging people of Delhi to “please, please go eat at Baba ka Dhaba in Malviya Nagar”.

In the video, the 80-year-old stall owner Kanta Prasad shared that he and his wife Badami Devi start cooking at 6.30 am and are ready with the day’s meal by 9.30 am. Dal, curry, parathas and rice are kept in large dishes, ready to serve for around Rs 30-50 per plate.

Asked about how much he earned, Prasad broke down and produced Rs 10 notes from a box. In four hours, Rs 50 was all they had managed.

Within hours, the video was retweeted and liked by thousands. Many people offered the couple financial help and some even visited his stall to meet him and have their special ‘Matar paneer’.

Among those who have tweeted their wish to help them were actor Sonam Kapoor, Ravina Tondon, Athiya Shetty, Swara Bhaskar, cricketer R Ashwin and IPL team Delhi Capitals.

“We are very happy with the number of customers that are turning up now. We are grateful for the public support,” said Kanta Prasad. His wife added, “During the lockdown months we could not sell anything. We struggled to survive but today we have been flooded with customers. We want to give our blessings to all those who helped us.”

Soon, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Somnath Bharti from Malviya Nagar visited Baba Ka Dhaba and assured help to the couple.

Bollywood star Raveena Tandon wrote on Twitter, “#BabaKaDhaba #dilliwalon #dil #dikhao. Whoever eats here, sends me pic, I shall put up a sweet message with your pics ! Heart suit #supportlocalbusiness #localvendors.”

Meanwhile, Swati Maliwal, Chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women, posted another video in which several people can be seen waiting for their meals at the stall.

Many people who actually went and eat at ‘Baba Ka Dhaba’, further shared countless pictures and videos. In a new video, “Baba” had this message, “It is not just me…there are many others who need help, who lost their earnings.”

The internet is not a bad place after all!
