Billy Gunn signals retirement after losing against House of Black | Watch Video
Wrestling great Billy Gunn made a symbolic gesture to indicate his retirement after losing to House of Black at AEW Collision. He removed his wrestling boots and placed them in the center of the ring as a symbol of respect and farewell.
Billy Gunn, Max Caster, and Anthony Bowens had high expectations for winning the AEW World Trios Championship on the July 22 edition of AEW Saturday Collision. Their hopes were dashed, though, when they lost to The House of Black in the game. Billy Gunn was given a crushing blow during the tight fight by Malakai Black’s potent finisher, the Black Mass.
Billy Gunn was contacted by Buddy Matthews and Malakai Black following the match, who both appeared to say something to him that had a significant effect on him. After their discussion, Billy Gunn made the decision to take the laces off his wrestling boots and leave them in the middle of the ring as a symbol.
Billy ignored Max Caster and Anthony Bowens’ attempts to engage him in conversation as he walked out to the backstage area.
Several fans reacted to the incident on Twitter. One user wrote, “I just watched the most over Billy Gunn has ever been in his entire career since 1998 just leave his boots in the ring to signal his retirement. “
“Billy Gunn looking like he’s hanging up the boots. A 34 year career where he’s wrestled everyone from Sting to Sting,” another user tweeted.
Billy Gunn left his wrestling boots in the ring after the match as a show of his intention to retire from the sport of professional wrestling. The audience reacted by chanting “you still got it,” honoring Billy Gunn’s illustrious career and services to the wrestling community.
