Champion of champions: Nation lauds PV Sindhu after she wins gold at CWG

India shuttler PV Sindhu on Monday defeated Canada’s Michelle Li in the final to win the Commonwealth Games 2022 women’s singles gold medal. 

“I had been waiting for this gold for a long time and finally I have got it. I am super happy. Thanks to the crowd, they made me win today,” said Sindhu after the final.

The world number seven from India outplayed her 13th ranked opponent 21-15 , 21-13 to win her first CWG gold in the singles division. The 27-year-old had earlier won the bronze medal in 2014 Glasgow and silver in 2018 Gold Coast.

Her father PV Ramana reacted to the win, saying, “It’s a great moment; she had 2014’s Bronze, 2018’s Silver & now it’s Gold. She eagerly wanted this. We’re glad she comfortably won in finals & hope she continues.”

Following her win, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu lauded the ace badminton player.

“The phenomenal P V Sindhu is a champion of champions! She repeatedly shows what excellence is all about. Her dedication and commitment is awe-inspiring. Congratulations to her on winning the Gold medal at the CWG. Wishing her the best for her future endeavours,” PM Modi tweeted.

“P V Sindhu has won the nation’s heart by winning a historic badminton gold at #CommonwealthGames. You created magic on the court, enthralling millions. Your masterly win makes our Tiranga fly high and our national anthem resonate at Birmingham. Heartiest congratulations!” the president tweeted.

“The brilliance of @Pvsindhu1 creates history once again!You had us glued to our tv screens! What an amazing show of excellence and determination!Congratulations on a remarkable GOLD 🇮🇳 #CWG2022 ! PV SINDHU you are India’s PRIDE !,” wrote Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.
