Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah took a five-for in the second Test against Sri Lanka at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Bumrah’s venomous bowling helped India bowl out Sri Lanka for 109 runs and take a 143 runs lead in the first innings. With this fifer in the 29th Test, Bumrah equalled legendary Kapil Dev’s incredible Test record while also achieving an Indian feat.

Sri Lanka resumed Day 2 at 86 for 6 and Niroshan Dickwella kickstarted with back-to-back boundaries off Bumrah. However, Bumrah returned in the next over to bounce out Lasith Embuldeniya for 1.

Dickwella was the next man to depart as Bumrah dismissed him to register his first 5-wicket haul at home, while Ravichandran Ashwin took a couple of wickets to bowl out Sri Lanka for 109. Sri Lanka managed to add only 23 runs in 35 balls on Day 2 and handed India a massive 143-run first-innings lead.

It was Bumrah’s eighth five-wicket haul. Before Bumrah, it was only Kapil Dev who registered as many five-wicket hauls among Indian seamers at the same point in his career.

Bumrah has two five-wicket hauls each against West Indies, England and South Africa and one apiece against Australia and Sri Lanka. The only team against which he is yet to pick a five-wicket haul is New Zealand.

Bumrah’s maiden fifer in pink-ball Test

While equalling Kapil Dev’s feat, Bumrah also became the fourth Indian bowler to pick a five-wicket haul in Day-Night Tests after Axar Patel (2), Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav. And his 5/24 is now the second-best tally by an Indian seamer in pink-ball Tests after Ishant’s 5 for 22 against Bangladesh in 2019.

Bumrah’s 5 for 24 is also the best figure registered by an Indian seamer against Sri Lanka, surpassing Ishant’s 5 for 54 in Colombo in the 2015 tie.

Overall, it is the third-best figure in the day/night Test by a seamer after James Anderson’s 5 for 16 in Leeds in 2016 and Pat Cummins’ 6 for 23 in Brisbane in 2019.
