The Indianapolis Colts have made a roster move ahead of their Week 3 game against the Baltimore Ravens. They are releasing running back Deon Jackson, as per a source, and plan to elevate Trey Sermon from the practice squad for the upcoming game.
Deon Jackson had been thrust into the starting role for the Colts in Week 1 due to Zack Moss recovering from a fractured forearm. However, Jackson’s performance in that game didn’t meet expectations, as he managed just 14 yards on 13 carries, caught five of six targets for another 14 yards, and unfortunately lost two fumbles. With Zack Moss returning to action last week, it’s clear that Jackson’s playing time was limited, ultimately leading to his release.

Zack Moss is expected to take on a leading role in the Colts’ backfield until Jonathan Taylor, who is dealing with an ankle injury and is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, can return.
It’s worth noting that rookie Evan Hull has been ruled out for the season due to a torn meniscus, leaving Jake Funk and Trey Sermon as the only other running backs on the Colts’ roster at the moment.
The decision to bring up Trey Sermon from the practice squad suggests that the Colts are looking for additional depth in their backfield as they prepare to face the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3.
Deon Jackson entered the National Football League as an undrafted free agent. He played college football at Duke University.

Deon Jackson had a notable career at Duke, where he showcased his versatility as a running back. He was not only a capable ball carrier but also a receiving threat out of the backfield. During his time at Duke, he accumulated rushing yards and receiving yards, establishing himself as a well-rounded offensive player.
After going undrafted in the NFL Draft, Deon Jackson signed with the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent. He joined the Colts in 2021.
