Umran Malik came back with four wickets for 28 runs as the Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated the Punjab Kings by seven wickets at the DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on Sunday. The Jammu and Kashmir-based pacer, in the first innings, delivered a perfect final over – a rare four-wicket maiden – to restrict Shikhar Dhawan and co for 151 before a combined effort by the batters helped the team seal the game.

The 20th over has been a maiden only four times in the IPL. Before Malik, Irfan Pathan in 2008, Lasith Malinga in 2009 and Jaydev Unadkat in 2017 had achieved the feat.

Malik was brought into the attack in the final over when a Mayank Agarwal-less PBKS were 151/6. An in form Liam Livingstone and Odean Smith were on strike. The 22-year-old first had Odean Smith with a slower one before castling Rahul Chahar and Vaibhav Arora in successive deliveries. Meanwhile, Livingstone, who scored 60 off 33 balls with the help of five boundaries and four maximums, saw the entire drama unfold from the other end.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, SRH’s highest wicket-taker in IPL, recorded figures of 3/22 – his best and second three-wicket haul in 48 matches since 2018.

The win took SRH to eight points, moving up from the middle-table rush to climb to fourth spot, while PBKS remained

“Needs some time (to realise what he’s done). In Jammu, it usually gets to 47 or 48 degrees, so it doesn’t matter (the heat), it’s actually nice to play in this heat. I think I have got my line and length better over the last few days, the plan was to keep it full and straight, and in that channel just outside off,” Malik said after achieving the feat.
