Since Virat
Kohli
stepped down as India’s Test captain on Saturday, a day after the defeat to South Africa in the third Test in Cape Town to seal a 2-1 series
loss, there has been a lot of speculation over who his successor will be.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India
(BCCI) now has a big decision to make as they will have to appoint a new Test captain.
Kohli has left some big boots to fill as he leaves as India’s most successful captain
in the longest format, leading the country to a number of unprecedented
achievements – like winning a maiden Test series in Australia.

Vice-Captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are among
the frontrunners for the role, with the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah among the dark horses that could be named as India’s next Test captain.

However, a top BCCI official told NDTV that “no
name has been discussed yet” and that the governing body has “enough time to
decide” who will take over as the Test captain. The official insisted that Sharma
is the designated vice-captain and that the selectors will discuss all options
before making the final call.
