Liverpool is back where Manchester United is far from reaching: Top of the Premier League.

It wasn’t just Mohamed Salah scoring twice at Anfield, following a hat trick in the 5-0 humiliation in the reverse fixture.

Salah also contributed to Luiz Diaz‘s first-half goal. Sadio Mane set up Salah’s first goal. Diaz’s pass also set up Mane’s score.

All of this came before Salah added to United’s woes with a chipped finish for his second, assisted by Diaz’s replacement, Diogo Jota.

A glorious night for Liverpool ended with four fist pumps by manager Jurgen Klopp in front of the Kop. For the four goals? And maybe for the four trophies the season could yet end with.

The League Cup has already been won, and the club will face Chelsea in the FA Cup final next month. Before that, they face Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals.

It increases the pressure on Manchester City, who play Brighton on Wednesday. This was the first time Liverpool had won three consecutive league games against United since October 2009. Liverpool had been thrashed 5-0 at Old Trafford earlier this season, but at the time it was a competitive contest between England’s two most renowned clubs.

United, who had one shot on goal, have now conceded more Premier League goals this season than 18th-placed Burnley, and the result was a further setback to their top-four ambitions.
