San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy’s numbers in debut NFL playoffs
- San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy is having an unbelievable season for a rookie
- He became the first rookie QB to win on two back-to-back starts in the playoffs
- He had zero turnover against Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional playoff on Sunday
Brock Purdy, the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, started his season as the Mr. Irrelevant, but made his way through – throw by throw- to become one of the top performing rookies in the 2022-2023 NFL season. Since having replaced Jimmy Garoppolo against Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers on December 11, 2022, the quarterback has now racked up some unbelievable numbers for a rookie.
As expected, he started the 49ers Divisional playoff game against the Dallas Cowboys at the Levi’s Stadium on Sunday night. In the previous Wild Card game against the Seattle Seahawks, Purdy impressed with 200 yards of throws, which made him the first rookie quarterback in the history of NFL playoffs do so. He completed 18 of his 30 passes for 332 yards and four touchdowns, which is also a playoff record for a rookie quarterback
Against Dallas, he repeated the performance, setting the record so high that years might pass before anyone can touch it. The former Iowa State player managed to make his throws without a single turnover, as he fired the 49ers to a decisive 19-12 victory on Sunday. ESPN NFL reporter, Nick Wagoner noted: “Against a very good defense, Purdy had the number that mattered most: zero.”
Purdy won all five of his starts during the regular season, throwing for 1,374 yards, thirteen touchdowns, and four interceptions while leading the 49ers to the second seed in the postseason. Since Kurt Warner in 1999, no quarterback has had a passing rating higher than Purdy’s 119.4 through his first five starts. Surely, by all counts, Mr. Irrelevant is now the Mr. Most Relevant, if ever such a term existed!
The 49ers will now be facing the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL Conference Championships on Monday, January 30. All eyes will be on Purdy and if he can inspire the Eagles in what will be the biggest game of his short but glorious career.
