US rapper Lil Baby detained in Paris for possession of cannabis

American Singer Lil Baby was arrested in France on Thursday for allegedly “carrying drugs,” and is in the custody of police as a part of a narcotics investigation, according to French media reports.

NBA star James Harden, who was in Paris with rapper Lil Baby for the Fashion Week, was also stopped and searched but was released, the reports said.

According to the reports, Lil Baby, whose real name is Dominique Armani Jones, was in a parked car from which “wafted a smell of cannabis.” During the search on the chic Avenue Montaigne in the heart of the capital, “about 20 grams of cannabis grass were discovered” in the car, reported Le Parisien newspaper. 

After which Baby was taken to a nearby police station and kept in custody. An investigation has been opened by the city’s 8th district police precinct for transporting drugs, the prosecutor’s office said.

A video was posted on Twitter, where Harden, who plays for the Brooklyn Nets, was seen surrounded by several police officers, with one patting him down. 

The newspaper said both Jones and Harden were among a group who were stopped by police at about 4.50 pm local time after three people exited a car smelling of marijuana. Representatives for both, Jones and Harden did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Lil Baby, who actively participated in the Black Lives Matter movement, was twice nominated for a Grammy music award in 2020 for “The Bigger Picture”.  

He is best known for his songs like “My Dawg”, “Freestyle”, “Yes Indeed” and “Drip Too Hard”, with the latter two songs peaking at numbers 6 and 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart respectively.

His debut studio album “Harder Than Ever” was certified RIAA Platinum, and included the song “Yes indeed”, which peaked on the Billboard Hot 100.
