Wayne Rooney, a former English soccer player, has agreed to step up as the new coach of DC United in Major League Soccer. The new deal is yet to be announced officially, however, unnamed team representatives have revealed the new leadership.

Rooney, who also played for the club in the 2018 and 2019 seasons, is set to replace interim coach Chad Ashton, who replaced Hernan Losada earlier this season. The team’s management currently awaits the completion of the visa approval process.

DC United is tied with Chicago for the fewest points in the 28-team league with a record of 5-10-2. United lost 7-0 on Friday night at the Philadelphia Union, matching the MLS record for the biggest margin of defeat, according to reports from Associated Press.

Rooney, 36, starred for Manchester in the English Premier League from 2004-17 and is the leading goal-scorer in the history of the English national team.

Rooney’s trophy cabinet is already crowded as he moves on to take a managerial role at DC United. After joining Manchester United, Rooney went on to secure five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, one UEFA Europa League, three League Cups and one UEFA Champions League.

He extended his journey after becoming part of the English football team and went on to play in the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

Rooney resigned as English club Derby’s manager last month after 18 months in charge. The Manchester United and England star joined the team in January 2020 as player-coach and ended that year in temporary charge following Phillip Cocu’s departure.

Defining his time at the club as a “rollercoaster of emotions”, Rooney said: In fairness to them, they tried tremendously hard to change my decision but my mind was made up”, according to reports from Associated Press.
