Who was Dickey Davies?

After clearing his eleven-plus exam, Davies enrolled at Oldershaw Grammar School. He later served in the Royal Air Force’s National Service program and worked as a purser on the ocean liners RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Elizabeth.

He worked as an announcer for Southern Television in his first position in the industry. Early in his career, Davies went by his full name, Richard Davies, but Jimmy Hill, a coworker at ITV Sport, suggested that he change it to Dickie Davies.

As Eamonn Andrews’ understudy, Davies started working on World of Sport (formerly known as Wide World of Sports) in 1965. ITV paid Andrews £40,000 to host the program (equivalent to £825,250 at 2022 prices), and Davies took over the post of host in 1968 after Andrews departed the program.

Davies stayed with ITV after World of Sport concluded in 1985, presenting boxing, darts, and snooker in addition to helping with their coverage of the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In August 1989, he quit ITV Sport.

After leaving ITV, Davies joined the European Broadcasting Union and the original iteration of Eurosport, which was then owned by Sky. In addition to the one-time 1991 Mita World Masters, he hosted their snooker coverage.

As the first sports editor for Classic FM, he broadcast sports updates from his house in the station’s early years. After having a stroke in 1995, Davies was forced to leave his job at Classic Radio.

Though it took him a year or two to fully recover his speech, he eventually made a decent recovery. He was the frontman for Dickie Davies’ Sports Heroes in the late 1990s.
