Why Gareth Southgate stopped coaching his son Flynn’s Sunday football team

’s Group B match between England and Wales is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, November 29, at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan, Qatar.

Gareth
Southgate
, an English professional football manager, and a former player has been
managing the England national football team since 2016. In 2021, he signed a
contract that made him the manager of the England football team till 2024.

His
son, Flynn Southgate, now 19 years old, has also played football, in fact, was
once coached by his own father. His teammates, however, hated their new coach,
and Gareth Southgate was forced to quit as his son’s Sunday side.

“I was
asked to help coach my son’s junior football team.”, he had said, adding, “As I
was a manager at the time, I felt I could at least bring some experience to the
role. As it turned out, I struggled to find a way to effectively communicate
with players this young.”

In his autobiography,
Anything is Possible, published in November 2020, he said, “As soon as a match
started, they all just got over-excited and flocked around the ball! It was
amusing, but it reminded me my coaching abilities are better suited to working
with older players.”

Southgate also
mentioned that his son had stopped playing football. He said, “I loved it
– the kids hated it. My son doesn’t play football anymore, so just leave it at
that.”

Gareth
Southgate is a former footballer who has played as a defender and a midfielder.
After more than 500 league appearances, he retired from football in 2006 at the
age of 35.

He then began his managerial career as Middlesbrough Football Club’s
manager in 2006. He has also managed the England under-21 team and is
currently in managerial duties for the England national team at the 2022 FIFA.
