The 2022 Commonwealth Games will kick off on July 28 in Birmingham. Over 5,000 players from 72 nations will take part in this multi-sport tournament. The opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2022 will be held on July 28 at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. Queen Elizabeth will miss the opening ceremony due to her ‘mobility issues’ and Prince Charles will fill in for his mother.

Queen Elizabeth has had some medical complications in the recent past. She uses a walking aid and this is probably the reason for her skipping the mega event. Earlier this year, the queen of the United Kingdom could not attend the state opening of Parliament. Prince Charles and his son Prince William were present on behalf of the Queen.

Queen Elizabeth has been skipping several events in the recent past. Most of her overseas meetings are being undertaken by the Prince of Wales. The Platinum Jubilee celebration of Queen Elizabeth took place on the seventh of the last month when a new set of Monarch’s official duties were introduced. Queen Elizabeth was given relief from several ‘must fulfill’ obligations at the Platinum Jubilee event.

Prince Charles made a statement on ‘sports unity’ recently where he said ‘’In a world currently riven by conflict and division, these games- so aptly called ‘the friendly games’ – stand as a shining celebration of our unity, our diversity and our pursuit of shared excellence.’’

The Commonwealth Games 2022 will be the first Commonwealth event since the pandemic. New COVID guidelines will be followed as players will have to take a mandatory polymerase chain reaction test before landing in Birmingham. Another such test will be done on arrival. The tournament will take place in 15 different venues in Birmingham including Edgbaston Cricket Ground as cricket makes a comeback to CWG for the first time since 1998.
