A 12-year-old boy was shot near Dunbar High Football Field in Baltimore, Maryland, causing the Baltimore City Public Schools to halt a football game on Friday. The incident unfolded on the evening of the game, amidst a crowd of people in the 1100 block of Madison Street.

Initially believed to be an 11-year-old victim, authorities later confirmed the boy’s age as 12. Thankfully, he was rushed to a local hospital and is now in stable condition.

Acting Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley addressed the situation, indicating that at this point, they believe there was only one shooter, though investigations are ongoing.

Mayor Brandon Scott emphasized that the incident had no connection to the football game and lamented the senseless violence occurring in the neighborhood. He stressed the importance of residents being able to enjoy their community without fear of such acts.

Out of an abundance of caution, the football game was called off early, and school officials confirmed that all student-athletes were safe. Mayor Scott expressed his concern for the young victim, stating that the week should have ended differently for him, with the focus on enjoying the first week of school and outdoor activities.
