Carnival cruise ship catches fire while docked in Grand Turk. Video

A Carnival Freedom cruise ship docked in Grand Turk caught fire on Thursday morning. The ship departed from Port Canaveral in Brevard County, Florida, on Monday for a five-day cruise in the eastern Caribbean.

A video captured by a passenger identified as @Chester4x4 on Twitter showed thick black clouds of smoke coming out of the vessel’s funnel as crews worked to contain the blaze.

Emergency crews responded to the ship to extinguish the fire inside the ship’s funnel.

In a statement, Carnival said that all guests and crew were safe. They were cleared by local authorities to go ashore.

“Carnival Freedom’s emergency response team quickly activated and extinguished a fire inside the ship’s funnel while the ship was in Grand Turk. All guests and crew are safe, and the ship’s guests were cleared by local authorities to go ashore. We continue to assess the situation. Carnival Freedom left Port Canaveral on Monday on a five-day cruise,” a spokesperson said.

The cause of the fire was not known.
