Hollywood actor Amber Heard, in her defamation trial against former husband Johnny Depp, has been criticized for a lot of things these past few days. From fake crying to exaggerated flinching during the trial, it seems like every bit of Heard’s court antics transform into social media’s latest laughingstock.

Recently, several social media users have claimed that the ‘Aquaman’ actor brought cinema to the court, copying a snippet of her testimony for the 1999 psychological thriller ‘The Talented Mr Ripley’.

The claim

On May 6, Heard took the witness stand and blurted a detailed account of the alleged sexual and physical abuse she went through during her marriage with Depp. Soon after, several social media users claimed that a part of Heard’s testimony was “copied verbatim” from the 1999 film.

A user on Twitter then made the claim of sharing side-by-side images of the film’s dialogue and an extract from Heard’s testimony.

In the film, Gwyneth Paltrow, who plays Marge in the film says: “The thing with Dicke…it’s like sun shines on you, and it’s glorious. And then he forgets you and it’s very, very cold. When you have his attention, you feel like you’re the only person in the world, that’s why everybody loves him so much.”

“Check this out. Amber Heard on the stand yesterday and what she said compared to the lines in The Talented Mr Ripley. Holy smokes this is CRAZY,” the user wrote as the caption.

But how accurate is the claim?

According to the live stream of the trial available on the internet, Heard did not plagiarise her testimony from a film about a creepy young man obsessed with a lavish lifestyle.

However, some of Heard’s words and tone do appear similar to a dialogue from the film, such as her statement- “When I was around Johnny I felt like the most beautiful person in the world—then he would disappear.”

Despite the sentence delivering the same idea and tone from a line in the film, it fails to be a “verbatim copy” as claimed.
