Elon Musk on Kathy Griffin’s Twitter account suspension: ‘She can have it’

Just hours after Kathy Griffin was suspended from Twitter for impersonating Elon Musk, the head of the social media site revealed that the comedian can have her account restored.

Replying to a tweet by Benny Johnson, Musk said that Griffin was removed for impersonating a comedian. But, she could get her account back for $8, he joked.

Griffin had changed her name on the service to Elon Musk. She began tweeting as Musk imploring people to vote for Democrats in Tuesday’s midterm elections.

“After much spirited discussion with the females in my life,” Griffin-as-Musk wrote in one tweet, “I’ve decided that voting blue for their choice is only right (They’re also sexy females, btw.)”

The SpaceX founder tweeted on November 6 saying that anyone impersonating a public figure would be “permanently suspended,” unless the account was clearly marked as parody.

After officially acquiring Twitter for $44 billion following months of legal wrangling, Musk launched an $8 monthly subscription service where any Twitter user may be able to easily attain a blue checkmark symbol. 

“Any name change at all will cause temporary loss of verified checkmark,” he added in the series of tweets.

Meanwhile, Musk also said that unlike beforehand, accounts will not receive a warning before they are suspended.

It remains unclear if Griffin is permanently banned from Twitter.

Former NFL player and author Chris Kluwe’s account was also suspended after he changed his display name to “Elon Musk” and tweeted memes about the new ownership.

“One Day at a Time” actress Valerie Bertinelli and “Roswell” star Brendan Fehr also had changed their names, but avoided suspension by going back to the original name in a timely manner.

“We are no longer all Elon Musk… … cause he locked those accounts,” Fehr wrote Sunday. “But don’t worry, he’s still perfectly fine with anyone tweeting lies and irresponsible conspiracies so all’s good and makes sense.”

Bertinelli also switched back her profile Sunday morning, tweeting “Okey-dokey I’ve had my fun and I think I made my point. I’m just not a ‘trending’ kind of gal. Never have been, never want to be.”
