As the world celebrated a peaceful transition of power after the Presidential inauguration of newly sworn-in US President Joe Biden, Tesla CEO and tech tycoon Elon Musk exchanged a thread of tweets with the mayor of Flordia city about building a tunnel system in the area.

While mayors seemed to have a positive outlook towards the proposed project, residents of the state were quick to speak their minds about concerns relating to the state’s shallow water table.

The tech-savvy billionaire, while replying to a tweet from Francis Suarez, the mayor of Miami wrote, “Cars & trucks stuck in traffic generate megatons of toxic gases & particulate, but @boringcompany road tunnels under Miami would solve traffic & be an example to the world.” He added, “If Governor & Mayor want this done, we will do it.”

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava and Fort Lauderdale ayor showed their interest by replying “Let’s talk” and “would love to be a part of this discussion”.

However, while people showed their skepticism towards the idea, a professor from the University of Florida said, “It doesn’t seem very smart and it is certainly going to be expensive.”

There’s a reason that Floridians haven’t built basements to shelter from hurricanes, despite the storms’ prevalence in the region.

The geology of Florida is complicated for introducing such infrastructure as it sits on a plateau of limestone with numerous subterranean canals and has the risky potential of flooding.
