US road safety
regulators asked Tesla on Wednesday to recall 158,000 cars in the country due
to a safety-defect, AFP reported.

The National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration reportedly said in a letter on Wednesday
that the electric car maker’s latest cars have an issue in their display screen
which, added to related problems, resulted in the loss of rearview camera and
similar other safety functions in the vehicle.

The defect, as per
the agency, has been found in Tesla model S cars from 2012 to 2018, and in
Model X cars from 2016 to 2018.

Elon Musk and Tesla
hit an impressive stride in 2020, with the company lifting output in California
and Shanghai by a large measurement as newer factories were established as the
company’s market value hit a steady growth by scoring a series of profitable
quarters back to back.

Recently, Musk became
embroiled in controversy, as the billionaire took it upon himself to castigate
health authorities in Alameda county, California over COVID-19 restrictions
hindering productions in a Tesla factory. The move garnered support from
incumbent President Donald Trump.

A compromise was
reached as the factory and its workers were deemed essential, and were exempted
from the curfew.
