Facebook bans the slogan “Stop the Steal” to prevent violence in the US

After 69 days of the US Presidential Election, Facebook has decided to eliminate all content related to the phrase “stop the steal” from the platform, reported CNN. 

The announcement came after the famous social media platform investigated the posts related to the US Capitol violence and decided to step up its regulation against the phrase. 

Facebook’s Vice President of integrity, Guy Rosen, stated, “With continued attempts to organize events against the outcome of the US presidential election that can lead to violence, and use of the term by those involved in Wednesday’s violence in DC, we’re taking this additional step in the lead up to the inauguration.”

The slogan picked up pace around the election day in the US amongst the supporters of the outgoing US President Donald Trump to spread the alleged “voter fraud” notion, reported CNN. 

According to Facebook’s analytical tool, the origin of the phrase “Stop the steal” dates back years but quickly became famous in the US around election time. 

After announcing the extension of the week-long ban on all US political advertising, Rosen said, “Group administrators will increasingly be required to review posts before they can be published, and comments that contain hate speech or incitement may be removed from group posts entirely”.

The announcement came after Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer commented on the ban of the US President’s Facebook account. She said, “Our ban is indefinite. We have said at least through the transition. But we have no plans to lift it.”
