Sheryl Sandberg, a top executive at Facebook, said that they currently have no plan to lift the suspension from US President Donald Trump’s account, reported AFP. 

She said, “Our ban is indefinite. We have said at least through the transition. But we have no plans to lift it.” 

After the violent mob filled with Pro-Trump protesters attacked the US Capitol building in order to disturb the certification of votes by Congress, Facebook, in addition to many other social media platforms, suspended the account of Donald Trump.

Platforms like Twitter, Snapchat and Twitch were among the first to take action against the outgoing President. 

Sandberg stated, ” Our policies are applied to everyone,” Sandberg said, noting that the platform has removed posts by the president’s son and “other world leaders. This shows that even a president is not above the policies we have.”

Mark Zuckerberg, while announcing the suspension of Trump’s account said that he used the platform to incite violence and the company was concerned he would continue to do so. 

Sheryl Sandberg admitted the hurdles and shortcomings of Facebook during the 2016 Presidential elections but added that Facebook had learned from its errors, reported AFP. 

Before the election day in the US, Facebook blocked and suspended numerous accounts that incited violence with hate-filled content in an effort to mitigate disinformation campaigns.

Sandberg also expressed hope to work with the incoming administration to regulate content on their platform which has negative outcomes, reported AFP. 

“We are a private company and we have a service we provide and it is our responsibility to make sure that service is not used for things it shouldn’t be used for, like what happened last Wednesday,” she said.
