Farmer union accuses police of implicating protesting farmers in false cases

Addressing a press conference on Saturday, Samyukta Kisan Morcha, a united front that represents over 40 Indian farmers unions, said that 16 farmers were still untraceable since the tractor parade on Republic Day, adding that it demands high-level judicial inquiry into the incidents that took place in Delhi on January 26, reported PTI.

The farmer leaders also claimed that protestors, who are agitating against Centre’s three agriculture laws in the national capital, are being implicated in false cases and harassed by Delhi Police.

“122 farmers have been arrested by Delhi Police in connection with 14 FIRs… Samyukta Kisan Morcha will provide legal and financial aid to arrested farmers,” the leaders said.

Thousands of farmers protesting the Centre’s farm legislation had clashed with the police during the tractor rally on January 26.

Many of the protesters, driving tractors, reached the Red Fort and entered the monument. Some protesters even hoisted religious flags on its domes and a flagstaff at the ramparts, where the national flag is unfurled on Independence Day.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Bhartiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait revealed plans by farmer leaders to hold meetings in Gujarat and said protesters in Delhi will not return home until the Centre reaches an “agreement” with them.

Tens of thousands of farmers, prominently from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, are holding sit-in demonstrations on several border points in New Delhi for over two months.
