George Alvarez, the suspect who has been charged with manslaughter for ramming his car into a group of migrants in Brownsville, Texas, has a lengthy criminal past.

The incident resulted in the tragic deaths of eight individuals, and twelve others sustained injuries, some of which are critical. During a press conference on Monday, police revealed that Alvarez has a long rap sheet including charges of numerous assaults, an aggravated assault, and additional charges for burglary, theft, DUI, and resisting arrest. This is the reason that he was well known to law enforcement officers.

According to CNN, he is currently being held on a $3.6 million bond. The 34-year-old is suspected of being involved in the incident that took place near the US-Mexico border, near a shelter for migrants and the homeless. The group into which Alvarez ran his vehicle over, was waiting at a bus stop. He crashed into 18 people after running a red light and losing control of his vehicle.

After the collision, George Alvarez reportedly attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by individuals present at the site. He faces multiple charges, including eight counts of manslaughter and ten counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Police and the FBI are still investigating to determine whether or not the crash was intentional. The investigators have narrowed down 3 distinct possibilities for Sunday’s crash, according to CNN. The first possibility is that the driver of the SUV was drunk. The police have collected a blood sample from Alvarez and will be running a toxicology on the same.

The second possibility is that the car may have “malfunctioned” and the third is that it was a deliberate attack. “All of these are possibilities”, Brownsville Police spokesperson Martin Sandoval told the cable news channel.
