Maya Cinemas in North Las Vegas sees police presence: Shooting or fight?

Maya Cinemas in North Las Vegas saw police presence, with one Twitter individual commenting that teens were popping fireworks in front of the movie theatre, leading people to believe there was a shooting. 

Those in the halls were evacuated as police cars remained in front of Maya Cinemas. One individual took a video of people filing out of the theatre after this incident. 

Another individual shared a photo from a little distance away from the theatre, saying they were “scrappin with some staff”. 

A scrap refers to a short fight or argument, but there are no confirmed reports of any altercation with staff members of the theatre. 

Maya Cinemas was chartered in 2000 and aims to develop, build, own, and operate movie theatres which can provide megaplex experiences in primarily underserved, family-oriented, and Latin-dominated communities. 

Moctesuma Esparza is the founder, and as per the Maya Cinemas site, he combines “his lifelong love of film, his vast experience as a film producer and pioneer and entertainment business developer in his pursuit of creating cornerstone movie theatres in communities lacking first run film entertainment options.”

The first Maya Cinemas was in Salinas, CA, in 2005, and now they have expanded to cities like Bakersfield, Pittsburg, Fresno and Delano. The Las Vegas theatre opened in January 2019. Maya Cinemas has its sights set on new projects to push expansion plans. 

As per the site, Maya Cinemas brings “first-run Hollywood movies in high-end theatres focused on quality of design, state-of-the-art film presentation technology, and providing first-rate entertainment with superior customer service.”

In 2021, cops in Fresno arrested an 18-year-old for a deadly shooting at Campus Pointe in the northeast, which occurred after there was an altercation with a group of people inside Maya Cinemas.

In 2020, Bakersfield police investigated a case where a woman died under suspicious circumstances at the Maya Cinemas on 1000 California Ave.
