The former vice president expressed constitutional concerns about appearing before the committee, saying that summoning a vice president to testify before Congress would be “unprecedented in history.”

Any invitation that was extended to me would require me to consider my special position as vice president, Pence added.

The Jan. 6 committee’s probe into the day’s events has focused on the former vice president’s role on Jan. 6, 2021, when the Capitol was under attack by supporters of former President Donald Trump seeking to prevent the certification of President Joe Biden‘s victory.

The committee provided proof that Trump launched a campaign of intimidation against Pence in an effort to persuade him to support annulling the 2020 election by disqualifying the official electors of the states. Pence refused to back down, ensuring Biden’s victory.

President Donald Trump appointed Pence as the 48th Vice President of the United States from 2017 until 2021. He formerly served as Indiana’s 50th governor, from 2013 to 2017. He is a Republican. Pence also served in the United States House of Representatives from 2001 until 2013.

Although Joe Biden and Kamala Harris defeated Pence and Trump in their race for the 2020 presidency, the Trump campaign refused to accept defeat, falsely claimed that there had been election fraud, and filed more than 86 unsuccessful lawsuits in various states. The Biden-Harris ticket was declared the winner of the election by Pence in his capacity as President of the Senate, despite Trump’s calls to annul the results and the assault on the U.S. Capitol during the Electoral College vote count.
