Two suspects remain at large following a shooting at Forsyth Tech Community College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, days after Nashville elementary school shooting.
According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunshots at the campus at 10:10 a.m. on Thursday morning, prompting a lockdown of the area and causing students and staff to take cover.
As of now, it remains unclear if anyone has been injured in the incident, but the suspects are still being actively sought after by authorities.
Forsyth Tech issued an alert warning of an “active shooter” and advised all students, staff, and faculty members to take shelter in place. “We are experiencing an active shooter situation. Law enforcement is on site. The campus is on lockdown with shelter in place for all students, faculty and staff,” the alert mentioned.
Around 11:50 am, updates from both the police and the college confirmed that there was no active shooter present on the campus. “We can confirm there is no active shooter on the campus of Forsyth Tech. There is still an active investigation on the campus. There are no other threats to any other schools in the area,” police stated.
A shelter in place is still in place. The situation is currently uncertain regarding injuries or fatalities resulting from the incident.
Despite confirmation from officials that there is no ongoing shooting, the situation remains dynamic as two male suspects, dressed in grey and black hoodies and armed, are still at large, reported WXII12
Multiple law enforcement teams, including drones and a helicopter, are actively searching for the suspects in the school. Nearby schools have also implemented shelter-in-place protocols, and concerned parents have arrived on the scene to locate their children.
The school superintendent confirmed in a statement that all Stokes County students were unharmed. “While I do not have all of the details, I can confirm there were Stokes County Schools students on Forsyth Tech’s campus at the time of the shooting. All Students have been accounted for and are safe,” the superintendent stated.
In the wake of these incidents, there have been renewed calls for stricter gun control measures to be implemented in order to prevent future tragedies.
As the investigation into the Forsyth Tech shooting continues, authorities are urging anyone with information on the suspects or the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
