Priyanka Chopras involvement with ‘The White Tiger’ both as a maker and as an actor
- Priyanka Chopra Jonas is an executive producer of the film 'The White Tiger'
- Priyanka's role in the movie was also appreciated by critics and the audience
- The movie released on Netflix in January
Actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas is ecstatic about her movie ‘The White Tiger’ making a mark worldwide. After earning nominations in the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards 2021 in the leading actor and adapted screenplay categories, the movie is expected to earn nominations at this year’s Oscars too.
However, not many know that apart from featuring in the Netflix movie, Priyanka is also an executive producer of the film, which is an adaptation of Aravind Adiga’s 2008 award-winning novel of the same name.
Priyanka, like many of us, found out about the adaption from Twitter and immediately informed her agent that she would want to attach her name to the film as the book meant a lot to her. She also felt that being a part of the film with help promote it.
“The book had a profound effect on me. It made me uncomfortable and made me think about a part of the world that we sort of desensitise ourselves to,” she said during the promotions.
She subsequently starred in the movie but had to toil to convince the movie’s director Ramin Bahrani to let her be an executive producer.
“I chased after it. I auditioned for it multiple times. I begged them to let me be an executive producer so I could put support behind it,” she said.
The rest is history. The movie, which released on Netflix in January, won accolades and was also one of the most-watched movies on the platform. With 90% fresh rating on review site Rotten Tomatoes, the movie went on to enter the Oscar race.
Priyanka’s role in the movie was also appreciated by critics and the audience.
Anupama Chopra, a film critic, wrote, “Priyanka is nicely understated as the Indian American Pinky.”
With Priyanka and her husband, Nick Jonas, announcing the Oscar nominations on Monday, it would be nice to see if the underdog favourite will make it to the list.
