Tornado touchdown reported in Illinois hours after warning from authorities

Kane County, which includes St. Charles and Elgin areas, in the state of Illinois was issued a tornado warning earlier in the day. However, recent reports from United States media suggest that a tornado touchdown has been reported in DeKalb County.

The touchdown, according to reports from the Chicago Tribune citing the United States National Weather Service, were reported in the towns of Kirkland and Esmond, which are prominent areas of the DeKalb County of Illinois.

In addition to counties in Illinois receiving tornado warnings from authorities, parts of northwestern Indiana were also given the alerts.

Counties like Boone, Bureau, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, Lee, McHenry, Ogle, Putnam, Will and Winnebago in Illinois were issued with the warnings while only four counties in Indiana, which included Jasper, Lake, Newton and Porter, were served with similar notices, according to reports from the Chicago Tribune.

According to weather experts, about four to five inches of rain poured down the northwestern areas of Chicago on Monday and caused “minor flooding” in areas of Boone and McHenry counties of Illinois.

Brian Leatherwood, a meteorologist who works with the National Weather Service said that strong hails were also a concern at the moment as the storm moved southwards. He further advised the people in the impacted areas to take cover from the storm.

“You certainly wouldn’t want to be out in it if you’re unprotected, but I don’t think it’s going to be too dangerous. We’re not talking softball (size) or anything to that effect”, he said, according to reports from the Chicago Tribune.

Kevin Donofrio, another weather expert working with the weather service, said in a statement, “For people outdoors, we’re kind of in this pattern when we’re going to have breaks, then we’re going to have storms at times, so it’s good to have your eye to the sky. Our motto here is: ‘When thunder roars, go indoors’,”, according to reports from the Chicago Tribune.
