A possible tornado touched down in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, Monday afternoon, uprooting some trees. The tornado was reportedly spotted on U.S. 1 north of Sleepy Hollow Road around 2.40 pm. Robert Haley, meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said no damages or injuries were reported.

Confirming the tornado, New Smyrna Beach police Lt. Mark Severance said, “The funnel cloud moved south parallel to U.S. 1 over the Intracoastal, came back around and passed behind the police department on Industrial Park Avenue and just dissipated,” News Journal Online reported.

Haley said the tornado was first reported one mile north of the New Smyrna Beach airport.

“From what we looked at on radar, it quickly moved over the Intracoastal river and dissipated,” Haley said.

New Smyrna Beach Police Department took to Facebook to share a video of the tornado.

“Tornado spotted a short time ago in New Smyrna Beach heading south/south east. Reports of some tree damage near Sleepy Hollow and U.S. 1. No other reports of damage at this time,” the video was captioned.

Meanwhile, storms moving through Central Florida on Monday triggered severe thunderstorm warnings in areas such as Orange Count. The warnings stated that the storm could bring with it small hail and damaging winds. Another severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Osceola County.

10 Tampa Bay meteorologist Natalie Ferrari said Monday’s atmospheric setup is capable of producing a tornado.

“When you have the amount of deep moisture overhead combined with a weak boundary settling through the state, enough convection and lift can be present to form an isolated tornado like the one seen here,” Ferrari said.

Meanwhile, a tornado was also spotted over Crystal Beach in Texas on Monday evening. However, it remained unclear if the tornado caused any damage.
