An emergency shelter-in-place has been issued for all individuals within a mile radius in Tucson, Arizona, after a truck carrying hazardous materials overturned on the I-10 highway.

An emergency shelter-in-place has been issued for all individuals within a mile radius in Tucson, Arizona, after a truck carrying hazardous materials overturned on the I-10 highway.

Authorities have issued a hazmat alert. Interstate 10 is closed in both directions in the area and there is no timetable for the roadway to reopen, according to ADOT.

As per the alert, people on the east of Houghton, west of Kolb, north of Valencia, and south of Voyager should take shelter immediately. All machines that bring in any outside air – like air conditioners and heaters – have to be turned off.

As per the Arizona DPS, the crash involved an 18-wheeler. It rolled over and began leaking the hazardous chemical.

“The Department’s Hazardous Materials Response Unit, along with partner agencies are working together to mitigate the incident,” DPS said in an email. “Out of an abundance of caution first responders are working to evacuate a perimeter around the area of the incident.”
