Punxsutawney is a borough in southern Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, United States, known globally for its annual Groundhog Day celebration.

Groundhog Day is annually marked on February 2 when the most popular groundhog Punxsutawney Phil makes the weather prediction. While Punxsutawney witnesses thousands of attendees on this day, the actual prediction location, Gobbler’s Knob, is actually in adjacent Young Township.

This year, Phil emerged from his burrow Thursday morning and saw his shadow, declaring there would be six more weeks of winter. Punxsutawney Phil made his prediction as the South and Northeast are bracing for an Arctic blast.

According to records, Phil has predicted winter more than 100 times.

Where is Punxsutawney?

Punxsutawney is located 84 miles northeast of Pittsburgh and 50 miles northwest of Altoona. It was incorporated in 1850. Punxsutawney is the largest incorporated municipality in Jefferson County with a population of 5,962 as of the 2010 census.
