Sharice Davids, the United States representative from Kansas’ 3rd congressional district, is the sole Democrat among members of the Kansas delegation in the U.S. Congress. Davids will be facing either Amanda Adkins or John McCaughrean, contestants for the Republican primaries, in the general election on November 8, 2022.

Davids, a member of the LGBT community, is the first Native American to be elected to the U.S. Congress from Kansas since Charles Curtis in 1983. The 42-year-old attorney, who is also a former martial artist, is a member of the Ho-Chunk people. Both her mother and maternal grandfather were U.S. Army veterans. Although born in Frankfurt, West Germany, Davids was raised in Kansas. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas and her Juris Doctor degree from Cornell Law School.

In the 2018 general elections, Davids managed to defeat then-incumbent, Republican Kevin Yonder. She repeated her good fortune at the polls in 2020 as well, triumphing over Amanda Atkins, the former chairwoman of the Kansas Republican Party.

Davids is currently serving as the chairperson of the Subcommittee on Economic Growth, Tax and Capital Access within the Committee on Small Business. She is also the vice chairperson of United States House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure.

However, post the redrawn 3rd district Congressional map, it remains to be seen whether Davids manages to hold on to the public support she had enjoyed in the two previous elections. Regarding her campaigning, Davids said, “I think it’s important for me to make sure I’m showing up…There are a lot of things I’ve been able to do over the course of my time serving the third district that I think people have appreciated, and I’m really looking forward to continuing to work hard for folks here.”
