Before the unintentional shooting catapulted Whittington into the limelight, the lawyer was well-known for his contributions to the growth of Texas’s Republican Party into the state’s preeminent political force. He was the man who the governors turned to when disturbed government agencies needed to be fixed.
When Whittington was shot, he was wounded in the face, neck, and chest, and suffered a small heart attack as a result of a pellet near his heart. About a week after the occurrence, he apologized to Vice President Cheney and said he was “deeply sorry for everything” the VP and his family had to deal with as a result of the accident. He also claimed, “accidents do and will happen.”
