Amazon Quiz (April 14, 2022): What was the ancient Roman name of this famous European city?
Armorica
Lugdunam
Lutetia
Burdigala
Answer: Lutetia
The Roman city of Lutetia preceded the modern French city of Paris and was the capital of a Gallic tribe called the Parisii, from around the middle of the 3rd century BCE.
As per available archaeological evidence, traces of Neolithic habitations in the area date as far back as 4,500 BCE, which preceded the founding of the Gallic settlement millennia later.
While the exact date of the Roman occupation of the settlement is not known, evidence of Roman occupation has been traced back to the 1st century BCE, and Lutetia’s annexation likely took place during the reign of Emperor Augustus.
Under Roman occupation, Lutetia was redesigned in the Roman way, with construction based on the model of Rome itself.
Over the course of their occupation, the Romans constructed several major monuments, some of which have stood the test of time and exist to this day.
Some famous monuments include the Forum of Lutetia, the Arenes de Lutece, the Roman Theatre, and the Cluny Baths.
The Romans also built several aqueducts and the renovated streets.
After the fall of the Roman Empire, Lutetia became the capital of the Merovingian dynasty of French kings, and eventually grew into what we know today as modern-day Paris.
