Jamaica used to be under British rule but the nation’s flag was hoisted for the first time on August 5, 1962. It signalled the freedom Jamaicans would not enjoy after 300 years of British rule. 

A bipartisan committee in the Jamaica House of Representatives designed the flag in 1962. It has a diagonal cross with four triangles juxtaposed. The flag follows the admiralty pattern. The cross is in gold, while two triangles are green, and the other two are black. 

The black triangles denote overcoming hardships, while the greens are for agricultural fertility. The yellow cross, called the saltire, represents minerals and the sun in the sky in Jamaica. 

“Hardships there are but the land is green and the sun shineth”, is the flag’s motto. Whitney Smith in Flags Through the Ages and Across the World, notes “The original Jamaican flag proposal was discovered to resemble closely the flag of Tanganyka, although the design was approved by British authorities, who should have been aware of the conflict.” 

At one time, the Jamaican flag was proposed to be blue with a Union Jack in the corner. A flag design contest in the country hadn’t yielded positive results either, leading to the formation of the bipartisan committee that ultimately made the flag that one sees today. 

The Jamaican flag is treated with the utmost respect in the country and there are certain rules in place, like the flag never being allowed to touch the ground.
