At least 45 killed, including children, in Bulgaria bus accident

At least 45
people were killed after a bus caught fire in western Bulgaria on Tuesday,
officials said. The bus has North Macedonian plates.

Among the
victims, there were children. Several people who sustained severe burn injuries
and lacerations were rushed to hospital in the capital Sofia as per Maya
Argirova, the head of a burn clinic in Pirogov.

“At
least 45 people were killed after a bus caught fire and crashed, or crashed and
then caught fire,” the head of the fire safety department at the interior
ministry, Nikolai Nikolov, told private BTV television.

The accident
happened around 2:00 a.m (0000 GMT) and the site of the accident has been cut

Most victims
were from North Macedonia, an official from the North Macedonia embassy in
Sofia told BTV.

According to
Nikolai Nikolov, a total of 52 people had been travelling on the bus when it
crashed and caught fire. Reports suggest that some people even tried to escape
through the windows in an attempt to save their life, few managed to do so
successfully.

The incident occurred
on a highway near the village of Bosnek on November 23 and the site was filled
with police cars, locals and the media within minutes.

Svetlan
Stoev, the Bulgarian minister of foreign affairs posted about the incident on
his official Twitter account. The Tweet which has been posted in Bulgarian can
be roughly translated to, “There is great sadness after the accident that took
the lives of citizens of I express my condolences to the relatives of the
victims. Quick recovery of the victims! 
will do everything to take care of them and clarify the causes of the
tragedy. is with friends at the tragic moment @Bujar_O”.

This is the
second incident in recent times that has ended up taking the lives of tourists
in Bulgaria. In 2018, 16 people were killed while 26 were injured enroute a monastery
when the bus crashed.
