Trump’s ‘stand back and stand by’ remark to Proud Boys decoded by Jan 6 panel

Donald Trump told the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by” in September 2020, months before the January 6 attacks on the US Capitol. The House Select Committee on Monday released a video breaking down the impact of then-President Trump’s remarks.

The January 6th Committee conducted a detailed investigation on the “stand back and stand by” remark. The probe was headed by Marcus Childress, an Investigative Counsel for the House Select Committee.

Here is everything that the January 6th committee found:

–Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, the former of chairman of right-wing organisation Proud Boys, responded to Donald Trump‘s comment on social media. “Standing by sir”, he wrote.

-Trump’s comment increased the membership requests for the Proud Boys. Jeremy Bertino, a member of the group, said the membership tripled after the remark.

-Shortly after Trump made the comment, Proud Boys created a created a chat called “Ministry of Self Defence”, which was used to establish a command structure in anticipation of the January 6 rally in Washington DC. The chat was created in December 2020.

-The Justice Department said Tarrio was in possession of a document called “1776 returns”, which set forth a plan to occupy crucial buildings in Washington DC on January 6. These buildings included the US House of Representatives and Senate chambers, the January 6 committee said.

-The January 6 committee reported that some members of Proud Boys were the first ones to breach the US Capitol complex’s Peace Circle. This breach was reported at 12:53 PM.

-The “stand back and stand by” was also heard by the Oathkeepers, another right-wing group in the United States. The Justice Department indicted Stewart Rhodes, the head of Oathkeepers. Rhodes reportedly told his followers that they are “not getting through this without a civil war.”
