The sale made on Tuesday bested the previous record for the comic, another copy of which was bought for slightly over $3.2 million in 2014.

The seller of the copy purchased it in 2018 for $2 million.

The 1938 comic featured Superman for the first time. It told readers about the origins of the superhero and how he came to Earth from another planet.
