The German health authorities said on Wednesday that the country’s daily coronavirus death toll has crossed 1,000 for the first time, AFP reported.

According to the figures from Robert Koch Institute, a total of 1,129 people have died in the last 24 hours. 22,459 new infections were recorded in the same period, it added.

The previous daily high in coronavirus-induced deaths was recorded last Wednesday when 962 people died of the disease.

An apparent drop in new infections and deaths in recent days was a result of local authorities not sending in their data over the Christmas period, the institute said.

Germany that had appeared to be doing fairly well in dealing with the first wave of coronavirus in the spring has now been hit by a second wave. More than 32,000 people have died from the virus in the country.

The vaccination drive in Germany has begun with a 101-year-old- woman in a care home becoming the first one to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech jab in the country.
