With the earthquake’s location and magnitude in mind, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said it expected tsunami waves to hit parts of Indonesia, Malaysia, and the southern Philippines.

An initial magnitude of 7.6 was reported by the USGS, however, a value of 6.9 was reported by the Philippine organization in charge of earthquakes.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology advised those living along the coast in the provinces of Davao Oriental and southern Surigao del Sur to leave right away and seek higher ground. Teresito Bacolcol said that a 3.2-foot tsunami might happen, but that the wave might be larger in coves and bays due to the magnitude of the earthquake.
