A volcanic eruption in the Cumbre Vieja mountains in Spain’s La Palma has caused hundreds more to flee their homes on Tuesday. The volcano first erupted on Sunday and has since caused at least 6,000 people to leave their homes, destroying large swathes of land and property in its path, Al Jazeera reported.

A new fissure appeared on the slopes of the mountain on overnight, releasing more lava which is making its way towards the sea, where further dangers await. If the lava, whose tempertaure exceeds 1,000 degrees celcius, meets with a large water body, it could cause an explosion and produce toxic gas.

The volcano first erupted on Sunday and has caused more than 6,000 people to leave their homes so far.
