After Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his split from wife, Sophie on Wednesday, his interview from 2014 has surfaced where he denies having extramarital affairs and defended his marriage.

Justin spoke to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in October 2014, a year before he became the prime minister of Canada. During the interview, he was questioned about extramarital affair rumors by the interviewer.

He said, “Our marriage isn’t perfect, and we have had difficult ups and downs, yet Sophie remains my best friend, my partner, my love.” He also insisted that the former couple were honest with each other “even when it hurts.”

When Justin was pressed about the ‘ups and downs’ and if they related to his “extramarital affairs” he simply responded with a ‘No.’ He further explained that he was actually talking about his “very difficult” and “high-pressured job.”

Sophie has also addressed questions about her marriage in the past. In a 2015 interview with Global News, Sophie was asked if she had concerns about opening her marriage to the public. She said that she had just one thing to say to everyone who has questioned her marriage. “Ask if whatever happened in our lives — I’m not saying it did or didn’t — as if we would answer that,” she said.

She also made it clear that although she was was going to serve on a public platform as the country’s first lady, her marriage was still going to be a private affair. She further added: “I can tell you right away that no marriage is easy. I’m almost kind of proud of the fact that we’ve had hardship, yes, because we want authenticity. We want the truth.”

On Tuesday, the former couple announced in a shocking announcement, on Instagram: ““Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate. As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy. Thank you.”
