Tens of thousands of people came together on Sunday in Spanish towns to support Palestinians and call for a halt to Israeli attacks on civilian targets.

About 35,000 demonstrators—among them several government ministers—participated in the events in Madrid. Joining the march was Yolanda Diaz, Spain’s deputy prime minister, who reiterated the nation’s demand for a rapid cease-fire and support for the victims of war crimes. She pointed out that just 14 nations—including the US and Israel—voted against the humanitarian truce, while 120 countries supported it. Spain was one of those nations.

Spain’s Minister of Social Rights Ione Belarra demanded a stop to the “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians during the same march in Madrid. As the leader of the extreme-left Podemos party, Belarra also called for nations to cut diplomatic ties and impose penalties against Israel, accusing European governments—including Spain’s—of being complicit in what she called a “planned genocide.”

About 12,000 demonstrators with comparable goals marched through Valencia, shouting things like “They are hospitals, not military bases.” Almost a thousand people demonstrated in the streets of Granada, presenting a manifesto that denounced both the crimes of Hamas and what they characterized as Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people.

Spain has been witnessing protests for the third week running in favor of the besieged and shelled population in Gaza.

Since October 7, Israel has increased its ground operations in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of almost 8,000 civilians, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
