River of wine flows through Portugal street after tanks with over 2 million liters burst | Watch Video

A river of red wine was seen gushing down a street in Levira, Portugal after two tanks carrying 2.2 million liters of the drink of Gods burst in the middle of transport.

The tanks belonged to Winemakers Levira Distillery, who were due to bottle the wine when the giant tanks suddenly gave way in Sao Lourenco do Bairro on September 10. Video from the incident has gone viral online, which showed a huge, fast-moving river of red wine flowing down a hill and around a bend as local people wondered in amazement.

The streets got flooded so massively that it triggered an eco alert to stop it from contaminating the nearby Certima River. The flood was blocked off by the Anadia Fire Department in order to divert it away from the river. It eventually ended up harmlessly in a field.

One basement in a home near the distillery was flooded with wine. The Distillers said they later dredged the wine-soaked land. The company apologized for the incident that made headlines around the world and said the wine-soaked soil had been taken to a special treatment plant.

“We assume full responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning and repairing the damage, having teams available to do so immediately. We are committed to resolving this situation as quickly as possible,” they said in a statement. According to experts, the amount of wine lost can be used to fill up an Olympic-sized swimming pool which holds 2.5 million liters of water.
