Yochved Lifshitz, one of the Israeli hostages held by Hamas, has been released for “compelling humanitarian” reasons, as confirmed by multiple sources.
Who is Yochved Lifshitz?
Yochved Lifshitz, an 85-year-old Israeli, just obtained her freedom in the complicated and ongoing crisis concerning Hamas prisoner release. Her release was made possible by a decision taken by Hamas’ armed wing, which cited “compelling humanitarian” reasons.
Yochved Lifshitz’s release comes only three days after the release of two other captives, Judith Raanan and Natalie, her teenage daughter. These two hostages are related to Martin Fletcher, a former NBC News correspondent.
The hostage crisis arose in the aftermath of a terrorist attack on Israel on October 7. Hamas kidnapped at least 212 people as a result of this incident. According to Israel Defense Forces spokesman Daniel Hagari, about 1,000 people were killed in this incident. As a result, Israel and Hamas engaged in a protracted confrontation. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported around 5,087 deaths as of Monday morning as a result of Israel’s retaliatory airstrikes in Gaza.
Hamas has stated that it does not hold all of the hostages, with some believed to be held by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, another militant group based in Gaza.
The situation in Gaza has significantly deteriorated, raising worldwide worry about a humanitarian crisis. Many parties have accused Israel of breaking international law by enacting what appears to be collective punishment measures.
Yochved Lifshitz and her husband, Oded Lifshitz, were held captive. Oded Lifshitz, a lifetime journalist and human rights advocate, was detained with Yochved on October 7 during Hamas’ raid of Gaza border villages. This traumatic event has brought global awareness of the severe problems these captives confront, as well as the region’s ongoing catastrophe.
