Wimbledon 2022 final: Barbora Krejcikova, Katerina Siniakova win women’s doubles title

Czech duo Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova defeated top seeds Elise Mertens of Belgium and Zhang Shuai of China 6-2 6-4 on Sunday to win the Wimbledon women’s doubles title. The victory also marked the second win of the title for the pair.

The Czech pair had won the Australian Open title earlier in 2022 and proceeded to clinch the Wimbledon title for the second time since 2018. However, they did not get a chance to play in the French Open.

They dropped only one set in their Wimbledon 2022 campaign, which came in the 1-6, 7-6(2), 6-2 quarterfinal win over Nicole Melichar-Martinez of USA and Ellen Perez of Australia.

“Playing Wimbledon final, I think it doesn’t really matter what category you play, you always get goosebumps when you entering the court,” Krejcikova said after the victory.

“I think for us, we really like to play on a big court, so I think we really enjoyed the atmosphere. From very first point we really, really wanted to win. I’m really proud of us, that we managed to do that and that we get another trophy,” she added.

The match lasted for only 67 minutes before the Czech duo wrapped it up. It was also their fifth Grand Slam win as a duo.

The pair were scheduled to compete at the French Open earlier this year, however, Krejcikova tested positive for the coronavirus, resulting in them withdrawing from the tournament. However, Krejcikova recuperated in a short time and the duo put up a memorable display at the All England Club.

“We’re just trying to show our best every time we step on the court,” Siniakova said after the match. 

“As Barbora said, we are really, really happy that we could play on the Centre Court and that we could win it,” she added.
