Users will no longer be able to block other accounts on Twitter, formerly known as what Elon Musk now calls X, as Musk thinks the feature “makes no sense.”

The tech tycoon announced on X Friday that “Block is going to be deleted as a “feature,” with the exception of DMs. It “makes no sense.”

Block is a function that allows you manage how you connect with other accounts on Twitter, according to X/Twitter. With the use of this tool, users can prevent certain accounts from following them, seeing their Tweets, or contacting them. If someone is stalking, threatening, or harassing you on the platform, blocking other accounts can be helpful.

Among those weighing in on Musk’s announcement was Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter, who approved of the decision: “💯. mute only,” Dorsey posted in reply to Musk.

Musk stated that X users might use the mute feature as opposed to the “block” feature. While blocking an account stops another account from seeing your public posts on X, the social network’s mute button only eliminates an account’s posts from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking that account. Even while you won’t receive notifications and the replies are by default hidden from your view when you “mute” X/Twitter accounts, they can still respond to your public posts.

It’s unclear if Musk’s decision to remove the block feature will result in any barred accounts being suddenly unblocked. An inquiry for clarification received no quick response from X/Twitter representatives.

A user of X can also make their account “private,” which gives them control over who can see and react to their postings. According to the company’s support website, “When you sign up for Twitter, your Tweets are public by default; anyone can view and interact with your Tweets.” If you choose to secure your Tweets, new followers will submit requests that you can accept or reject.

The richest man in the world right now, Musk is the CEO of both SpaceX and Tesla. After completing a $44 billion debt-heavy acquisition transaction for the business (and immediately sacking key executives and then laying off roughly 80% of Twitter’s workforce), he acquired ownership of Twitter in October 2022.
