Tata Group plans to take on Amazon, Reliance with all-encompassing e-commerce app

Tata Group, the $111 billion dollar business, is planning to get a big digital revamp with an all-encompassing e-commerce platform, reported Bloomberg.

The group is designing an app to accommodate the host of consumer products and services it offers, a source familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. A launch is expected by the end of 2020 or early 2021, as prototypes which include the conglomerate’s existing online assets and and consumer-oriented businesses. 

The Mumbai-based group is planning to take on e-commerce platforms like Amazon.com Inc, Flipkart and Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries Limited who just got invested with $20 billion from companies like Facebook Inc. and Google. On the other hand, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has bet $6.5 billion on growth in India.

The unnamed source also informed that Pratik Pal, chief executive officer of Tata Digital is heading the project. Pal has been in the group for thirty years and helped with the digital transformations of companies like Walmart, Marks and Spencer group, and Target Corp among others.
