Three possible ways CBSE class 12 students can be assessed

The Centre on Tuesday announced the cancellation of CBSE class 12 board exams citing the uncertain COVID-19 situation. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by PM Narendra Modi. It was also decided that students will be assessed as per well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner.

This leaves students, planning to take admission in various colleges across the globe, with legitimate questions like how their results will be calculated. Addressing these concerns, the PM said that the class 12 results will be made as per well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner.

While a decision on the scoring criteria of class 12 result is yet to be taken by the Centre, here are some possible ways that the government may use to evaluate student’s performance.

Evaluation based on internal marks

One way to promote students is an internal assessment of a student based on his academic performance throughout the year. This may include, internal unit tests, mocks exams, quizzes, projects and internal practical.

A weighted average of marks scored in class 9,10 and 11

This can be another effective way to award marks to students. The marks this way can be calculated by adding final score of the past three years, i.e. classes 9,10, and 11.

This will help students as they will get an advantage of their previous performance.

Counting practical marks as it is

One way to calculate marks for students of class 12 is to just take practical marks given by external examiners into consideration and call it a day.
